HR: 400G optical communication is expected to be commercialized in 2017/2018

7/12/2016, a recent report by Heavy Reading on 400G market analysis points out that as the cost of 100G connectivity in data centers declines, the demand for input/output bandwidth per rack grows, and the technology of next-generation devices In the next two years (2017/2018), 400G optical communication is expected to be commercially available.

A few years ago, system vendors have already realized the commercial use of coherent 400G optical transmission, but so far the deployment of 400G in long-haul networks is still not much. At present, about 20 manufacturers have launched 400G products including: optical components, optical modules, coherent and PAM4/NRZ transceiver components, OTN processors and FPGAs. HR believes that data center applications will be a catalyst for a significant increase in demand for 400G, driven by next-generation coherent and PAM4/NRZ optical transceivers, optical transport network processors and FPGAs.

HR pointed out that the combination of various trends has made data centers a driving force for significant growth in 400G deployments. Among them, as the number of rack servers grows, the input/output bandwidth requirements of each rack increase, and dual 25G Ethernet network interface adapters/modules are available. HR predicts that the input and output bandwidth per rack server will be close to 5Tbps during the forecast period.

This increase in rack bandwidth will drive higher connectivity requirements at the top of the rack. The new generation of QSFP28 optical transceivers will make 100Gbps a more common connection speed, driving the need for greater capacity on the interface, especially the interface capacity requirements in the router.

HR believes that as capacity needs grow in the data center, pipelines that connect data centers will also require 400Gbps connections.
